Chris has overcome his disappointment about the race and is ready to fight back next year.
»I did not get the title I so dearly wanted but to come up so close I can only be happy. I was beaten by the better athlete on this day, but do not go home overly disappointed as I can take strength from the fact that I pushed a World Champion to a personal best Swim bike and Run for him to actually beat me in the Worlds biggest race. This is the best Norman Stadler has ever gone and to be only 1 minute behind is encouraging«.
»I can say I am happy with the response I received from Faris and no longer have any issues or grudges against this guy. As he says, he was “frustrated with the 7 metre rule and took this frustration out in the wrong way.” Norman Stadler on the other hand has fuelled my belly to train for the next 12 months again and I look forward to racing the champ at every possibility I can next year. I want to get in his face and silence his complete arrogance and classless remarks with actions. I had no issues with Stadler before ( we were not friends but had a solid rivalry) but I have a real problem with the guy now. His is a “simple” guy and his remarks post race show this. I would like to thank him for giving me the fire and motivation for next season and I look forward to racing him soon. I will say he was the best athlete in the race on the weekend and was a deserving winnner. These actions alone dont make you a champion, and as we all heard he pissed off more than just me with his actions post race.«

For those among you who think that there has been enough about this Hawaii business, I shall open another scenario very soon. Tomorrow, the 2nd Biestmilch therapeutic talks take place in Baden-Baden at the internationally wellknown medical week http://www.medwoche.de/2006/index.phtml. In Baden-Baden meets the crème de la crème of complementary medicine. I keep you posted.
Kailua Kona, Hawaii, 4 days after the big race. IRONMAN world championship.
Well on Saturday was a tough day. The weather has been extreme in the weeks preceding the race and today was no different. We had rain, for a lot of the ride and then high humidity for the run. I had an average swim to be 60 seconds behind the main pack of contenders and onto the bike in 44th.
I was riding well with a huge group including Cameron Widoff, Rutger Beke, Francois Chabeaud, ….
But, I never felt very good on the bike.
Some of these guys had top ten finishes here in Hawaii over the last years. So I tried to stay calm and patient during the 180 km ride.
We were off the bike about 15 minutes down on Stadler. I was out of transition in 16th and thought I could run well, but it didn’t take long before I started falling behind and got passed by other runners. I was hoping I would start coming right. I did for a while but after the famous Energy Lab the wheels fell off completely and I was down to a slow jog for the last 10km. Also my motivation has gone! My goal was to break into the top ten and at the end I still managed 23rd.
It was a shocker of a run, but I am motivated to give it another try the next years and kick some butts. Now it’s time to have a well earned 4-5 weeks off away from training after a long year.
Thank you once again for all your support, hope to catch up soon.
Take care and all the best.
Wiesbaden, October 2006.
Back home after a wonderful and exciting stay on Big Island, Hawaii! I just jumped off the plane. Still with my eyes burning and my body aching, I try to get focused again.
IRONMAN race day was as every year a strenuous day: waiting, guessing who is in the lead, the commentary as bad as ever, therefore we along the race course finally desperately calling those back home who were as usually better informed via internet, we, sweating, cueing in front of restrooms, running to spot our athletes as often as possible, trying to gain entrance and get a glimpse of those whom we wanted to wish good luck or at the end of the day wanted to congratulate – in vain, waiting again. And at the end of the day all spectators were unified by a strange feeling of exhaustion without racing…
The race results were as every year, not as expected. Chris McCormack could not win the race, Faris, couldn’t either. It was Normann Stadler who made it with an extraordinary performance, congratulations.
Chris, who had an oustanding run, but could not catch up with Normann, crossed the finisher line 71 sec. after him. Chris said after the race: »I am disappointed! But today, I couldn’t have beaten him, he was too good.«
It is sad that only winning counts. Second place means nothing. Thus, Chris’ appearance in David Letterman’s show got cancelled by his sponsor Under Armour http://www.underarmour.com/macca/.
Chris McCormack, Macca, has and wants to try again next year. By the way, Chris races with biestmilch since 2003. Find Chris McCormack e-cards on http://www.biestmilch.com.
Even more disappointing was the race for Uwe Widmann and Alexander Taubert. They were not able to achieve their goals, a place among the first ten. The IRONMAN championship is a volatile race. One might guess whether this is the case because the world’s best triathletes are all there or/and(?) is it because the gods of the island have a finger in the pie?
Part IV of the interview with Chris McCormack http://chrismccormack.com/ . These words show one more time what an extraordinary athlete he is. Not only triathletes can learn from him.
In this part Chris underscores the importance of mental power for being a winner in life. In his former short-distance carreer Chris says, he didn’t give a damn on psychology. He thought it all to be crap. This attitude he changed completely.
Some of you probably know the famous theatre play by Samuel Beckett »Waiting for Godot«. It is one of most prominent plays of the theatre of absurdity. Yesterday, the hours at the guys’ place reminded me of that play, just waiting with this rather vague feeling that one has if one does not know what to expect from the days to come.
Alex Taubert and Uwe Widmann have definitely the ability to go for the first ten. But it is the German way not to be that outspoken. Then, let’s wait and see. All Alex and Uwe were among the first athletes supporting biestmilch www.biestmilch.com.
Kjell is one of our most active biestmilch amateurs.
Thanks to all three for their support through all these years, which means since 2002.
