Deutscher Windsurfcup Steinhuder Meer
(more…)

Wildflower
I have not raced the Wildflower race for 4 years now and cannot believe how fast the years have gone by. I have raced and won this event 3 times from 2001-2004 and thoroughly enjoy the entire experience of this incredible race. For those who have never experienced the Wildflower Triathlon it is well worth it. Over the weekend more than 6000 athletes will compete in the multi-sport festival and enjoy this historic race and the events around it, and more so will camp out and enjoy an atmosphere unlike any triathlon in the world.Unlike years gone past this race will be my first major event of the year.
I have spent most of the early year of 2008 training in the USA, as my family and I look at making the move to this country. In years gone past I have come off a very successful Australian racing campaign and have arrived at Wildflower in great condition. This year I will be racing the event off a heavy base and feel like my strengths will come later in the race. I am really looking forward to tackling this tough race again. The run course is terribly tough and the weather forecast for next week is for hot weather. My family and I will drive up from LA on wednesday and enjoy the atmosphere of this race. I compete on Saturday morning with a very strong field and look forward to the hit out.
It is great for the 2008 season to be finally here. I love racing and live to compete. This event signals the kick off of my season and from this point on it is full steam ahead to Ironman Germany and Hawaii in October, with a mix of high profile events throughout the year all used as gauges for my traning for these two major objectives. The old Wildflower curse claims that anyone who wins this tough event in May cannot win Hawaii in October. My aim is to break this curse this year and ultimately win these two events, along with many others to make 2008 a memorable year for myself. Anyway I have attached a picture from the last time I stood in the transition area of Wildflower in 2004. I have never been beaten on this course and hope to keep this in tact. Bob Babbitt who is in this photo with me is a big fan of this race and I look forward to catching up with him at the big race again. We always seem to grab a picture at Wildflower, so being a superstitious guy I will look for Bob again this year and snap my goodluck photo just before the race.Good luck to everyone racing Wildflower and I look forward to seeing you there.
Sewage disaster East of Baghdad
It’s a weekend again. Time to focus on different things than work and biestmilch. Perhaps you find some time to watch this video from rocketboom’s field correspondent. It reminds me of my time in Beirut’s refugee camp Shatila. I was working there just after the massacres in 1982. It looked and was pretty much the same.
Still it did not change a lot:

Fellow Triathlete killed by shark in Southern California
We got the tragic news that a fellow triathlete was attacked by a shark here in Southern California whilst training this morning. Coming from Australia, the fear of sharks is real and I, for one, have a huge shark phobia. I often swim out along the back of the break in the sea both here in the USA and very often at home in Australia. I never seem to be able to relax because of this fear I have for sharks. Most of my friends give me a hard time but my years of surfing and some close calls with them over the years has really added to my fear.
Today a small group of triathletes were swimming only 150 yards off shore in Solana Beach, San Diego, when the shark attacked and killed one of the swimmers. It was tragic news, but whenever we swim in their domain we are open to the dangers of the sea. Ironically I received this photo this morning from a close friend. The photo was apparently taken in Australia and she told me she would never swim in Australian waters, if this was what we had to put up with.
I am pretty sure the photo is not real but the story behind this photo was that this couple dived off their boat in the southern waters in South Australia. When their son dived in to take the photo as well he freaked out as he snapped the shot and swam to the surface. The couple followed him totally unaware of the danger they were in. It was only when they were on the boat and the captain told them about the shark that they started to believe the story. And then they got the photo developed. It is a hard story to believe but a good one anyway. I have seen many sharks in my life growing up on the beach surfing and my phobia is huge.
This photo captured all my fears in one. Hearing about a fellow triathlete being killed today by a great white shark added more to my phobia, and now my answer to all my friends and people who tell me I am stupid to worry……. well, maybe I am not. My condolences go out to all the family and friends of the Triathlete who was killed this morning whilst swim training in the sea.
